Theories

Curran & Seaton's theory
- big conglomerates' primary purpose is: profit (£££) & power
- dominated by small group of large companies (the big 6) - similar story lines (e.g. Fast and Furious) - likely to be successful again - small concentrated ownership - less choice for consumers
- smaller companies - (e.g. 16 films - 'I, Daniel Blake') - make products that are more diverse & niche

 Cultivation theory (George Gernbner)
- studied effects of TV on people / repeated representations - gradual long-term effects
- repeated representations grow (cultivate) our ideas & perceptions over time - reinforces dominant ideologies
- resonance - correlate aspects of own life w/ TV - amplifies perceptions of world / own experiences → mean world syndrome - believe world to be more dangerous than reality
- passive audience - doesn't acknowledge differences (gender / ethnicity / ect)
